It is a condition in which a man’s breasts get enlarged. This is caused due to an imbalance of hormones known as estrogen and testosterone. This imbalance is usually a result of puberty, medication, or certain health conditions that may cause hormone imbalances. Female traits like breast growth are controlled by estrogen whereas the male traits like muscle mass and hair are controlled by the testosterone. Gynecomastia is easily confused with fat. Gynecomastia forms small, rubber-like clumps under the nipple or both of the nipples and may feel sore. It may or may not affect both the breasts equally.

Who is a gynecomastia doctor?

An endocrinologist can be your gynecomastia doctors. An endocrinologist is a specialist in hormones related problems and might help you in this condition of gynecomastia by providing you suitable medications for treating the hormone imbalance or might consult to a surgeon in case of severe pain or tenderness.

Diagnosis and treatment

The gynecomastia doctors will require your medical history or any other history and your family’s health conditions. In some cases, the doctor might require to conduct a physical breast examination. You may also require to have-

  • blood test
  • mammograms
  • computerized tomography (CT) scans
  • MRI scans
  • testicular ultrasounds
  • tissue biopsies

In most cases, gynecomastia resolves over time without any treatment. Medications that can be used to treat this condition are those used to treat breast cancer. Excess breast tissue can also be removed via surgery. Two of the options are-

  • Liposuction
  • Mastectomy

Prevention of gynecomastia

The condition has only a few physical complications but does have psychological and emotional complications related to it. There are a few ways in which this condition can be avoided:

  • Avoid drugs.
  • Avoid excess alcohol.
  • Be careful about your medications.
  • Conditions with similar symptoms
  • Fatty breast tissue- a condition in obese patients that might look like gynecomastia.
  • Breast cancer- a form of cancer that causes enlargement of one breast in male patients.
  • A breast abscess- a type of infection in the breast tissue.

In case of complications, gynecomastia doctors recommend surgery that is carried out by a skilled surgeon. Time taken to recover from the surgery is usually 4 to six weeks. The pace of recovery depends on the persisting health condition of the patient. First, two to three days are recommended for total rest that ensures proper healing after the surgery. Post-surgery care comprises of-

Specific diet planning- Patients are required to intake clear fluids immediately after the surgery and gradually switch to a proper diet.

Alcohol is prohibited 72 hours after and before the surgery.

  • Avoid heavy physical activity.
  • Use compression garment
  • Take proper medication.

Gynecomastia can happen to anyone but one can always be cautious about one’s health and try to prevent the condition rather than developing it due to the imbalance in their diet or medication. Do follow the procedure as recommended by your gynecomastia doctor otherwise you might get into serious problems.
